Love These Programming Quotes

The first 90 percent of the code accounts for the first 90 percent of the development time…The remaining 10 percent of the code accounts for the other 90 percent of the development time.
Tom Cargill

Most of you are familiar with the virtues of a programmer. There are three, of course: laziness, impatience, and hubris.
Larry Wall

Measuring programming progress by lines of code is like measuring aircraft building progress by weight.
Bill Gates

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.
Brian W. Kernighan

Once a new technology starts rolling, if you’re not part of the steamroller, you’re part of the road.
Stewart Brand

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.

Your Baby’s Scrapbook

How Fast They Grow

Babies! They fill our lives with awe and beauty. They simultaneously make us proud and humble. We would like to freeze each moment and store it forever, but neither can most of us afford it nor do we have such time to spare. That is where HowFastTheyGrow.com enters the picture.

The people behind the website developed an invaluable RIA called digi-scrapbook that is rich in all senses. Cathy Bennett, founder and mom, deserves a special mention. Digi-scrapbook is an award-winning and patent-pending app built using Flex. How Fast They Grow website won two 2007 W3 Silver Awards, in Best Visual Appeal and Children categories.

First, create a new project in the digi-scrapbook upon becoming a member. Next, create a new page in the project; upload photos (JPEGs, JPGs, GIFs, PNGs) of upto 5MB from your computer; and choose a template (from 324 choices, all of them designed by moms). Drag and drop photos; edit them using the photo tools; edit text, fonts, sizes, styles; and save the page. (Watch this demo.)

You can later choose the pages you want to have printed, add them to your cart, and order. They will send you your 12×12 pages on color cardstock printed using Kodak Graphic Communication Solutions for $7.50 each.

“Many busy celebrity moms have gotten into How Fast They Grow’s time-saving scrapbooking website,” writes the Celebrity Baby Blog. No wonder. Check out the new contest details in this post.

10 Amazing JavaScript Image Libraries

From time to time I’m amazed by how JavaScript is capable these days. Here are 10 libraries to make your images look better and stand out. With the good JavaScript support from Adobe AIR, they might same you some coding for images heavy AIR applications. I’m just wondering if there are a Flex library just does all the tricks?

Did you ever want to add a lens to your page which will let you zoom into the images. This script will let you do that and much more using two versions of your image.

On AIR Tour

Until recently, I had no idea about this cool workshop that taught Adobe AIR. The on AIR European tour was an eleven city train tour through Europe where people could learn how to bring their web applications to the desktop using Adobe AIR. It was a hands-on experience for registered participants to learn this RIA technology from several biggies of the community involved in the event.

For those of us who couldn’t get to participate in the event, the official website contained a live view of all the latest content, blog posts, images, videos, and they are still available there.

Like all good things, however, the tour ended a couple of months ago. But then there was an AIR bus tour the previous year. So I guess (and hope) this will be a yearly convention.

How cool would it be if they came to Asia next year! Come to India, they must. I wonder what the mode of transport will then be.

Convert WebHelp to AIR

RoboHelp Packager for Adobe AIR, released recently after five months of beta testing, is now another gift from Adobe to technical writers. They can reach their end users with a greater appeal using this software, by converting their WebHelp files (created using Adobe RoboHelp 7) to an AIR app. This guarantees a richer user experience adding yet another feather to RoboHelp’s hat against the now obsolete WinHelp.

Help authors can package their content in styles of their choice using templates available with the packager. The auto-update feature allows you to notify/publish updates for all end users, and its enhanced workflow suport lets reviewers within and outside your network to post and publish comments. And then there is context-sensitive help.

You can find more details about these features in this page. Technical writers can turn to this Technical Communications blog for more help; it has further references. Download RoboHelp Packager for Windows here for free. JRE v1.6 or later, and Adobe AIR 1.1 are its pre-requisites.

For the time being, however, RoboHelp Packager supports only U.S. English.

Adobe RoboHelp is a HAT (Help Authoring Tool) used by technical writers to create help files in a number of formats including HTML, XML, DOC, PDF.
